Months before the attacks on the World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, reports documented that Afghanistan stood at the center of one of the world's worst-ever refugee crises. "Currently, one in four refugees in the world are from Afghanistan" projected Mark Hetfield, Director of the International Operations for the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, following research in Pakistan nearly six months ago! Now since the horrific attacks of September 11, Afghan refugees' already precarious survival has been exacerbated by the Taliban's destruction and resultant world responses. At the same time, world commitments to humanitarian assistance have begun to be generously renewed. Remembering these refugees has the chance to offer healing.
