Above ground citrus trees require 25-30 inches of water for a good crop. If that much water were given to the underground trees, the roots would rot. Frost is a common problem for above ground citrus, causing the fruit to fall to the ground. Frost is never a problem for the underground trees. Above ground trees receive the first sun in the spring and blossom first. The underground trees blossom about 4-5 weeks later. This extends the harvest season just as long as well. One could never go hungry.
