The 708 N. Blackstone Avenue location has a long and colorful history within the gay and lesbian community. The first gay club opened as “Fresno Express” in December of 1980. During the early years the club primarily served gay men, as the owners wanted to create an “LA or San Francisco style” gay men’s bar. After the closing of The Circle in 1981, Fresno Express was the dance club with the edge. Fresno Express also had one of the most popular Sunday parties, with a barbecue and performances by the “Fresno City Bulldrags” each Sunday starting around 1986. There were many upgrades to the club, including “The Back Room” (a sleazy little joint), and a state of the art Video Bar that provided music videos, comedy, and gay themed shows several nights a week. We had the “Dynasty Party” and the “Brothers” series each week for quite some time. The patio became quite famous (and sometimes quite sleazy) from the very beginning.
