| BTB is a non-profit corporation since 1985 – 501(C)(3) (EIN #770106437). Break the Barriers was founded by Steve and Deby Hergenrader. Steve played professional baseball with the New York Yankees and Deby was a nationally ranked gymnast. Through their years of competitive training, they never saw anyone with disabilities in sports. Deby’s sister, Kathy, has Down Syndrome. Kathy was Fresno County’s first Special Olympic athlete. Kathy, Deby and their family have been involved in Special Olympics for over 34 years and continues to do so. The Kathy Mullen /Hergenrader Family received the National Special Olympic Family Service Award. They are all still very active. They saw a need for bringing people who experience disabilities into the “able-bodied” world of sports and arts so everyone can benefit from each other. |
